Family Medicine Residency Faculty

E. Diana Burtea, M.D.E. Diana Burtea, M.D., F.A.A.F.P.
Program Director

Dr. Burtea was raised in the suburbs of Chicago. She attended Northwestern University for both her undergraduate and medical training and was part of the honors program in medical education there. She completed her residency training in family medicine at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Prior to joining the family medicine Center, Dr. Burtea was in private practice in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. During that time, she also completed the Primary Care Faculty Development Program at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Burtea, her husband, Jim, and their daughters, Cassie and Stephanie, reside in Carmel.


Tricia Hern, M.D.Tricia Hern, M.D.
Associate Director

Dr. Hern was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and earned her B.S. in biochemistry from Indiana University. She completed medical school training at Northwestern University in Chicago, and family medicine residency at University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. After her training, she returned to Chicago and spent seven years as a faculty member of the MacNeal Family Medicine Residency Program in Berwyn, Illinois. During her time at MacNeal, Dr. Hern served as family medicine clerkship director for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine for five years, and was associate director of the residency for two years. In 2008 she completed the Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University. She joined the faculty at Community as associate director in June of 2008.

Married to a Hoosier from northern Indiana, Dr. Hern and her family, husband Kameron and twins Gavin and Lydia, are thrilled to be in Indianapolis, centrally located to both sides of their extended families. They now reside in Zionsville.


Mark Lisby, M.D.Mark Lisby, M.D.
Associate Director

Born at Community Hospital East, Dr. Lisby grew up in Noblesville, Indiana. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Wabash College and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis and spent the next nine years in private practice in Zionsville, Indiana before joining the faculty at Community in 2001. He completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina in 2004.

Dr. Lisby and his wife enjoy spending time with their friends and family.


Rita Devnani, M.D.Rita Devnani, M.D.
Director of Pediatric Care Center

Dr. Devnani was born and raised in Bombay, India. She received both her undergraduate and graduate degree at the University of Bombay in India. She underwent a two-year post-graduate training in pediatrics and received a diploma in child health.

She completed her residency training in pediatrics, passed her written boards in pediatrics to receive her permanent certification, and added a one year fellowship in allergy and immunology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Since 1987, Dr. Devnani has been a licensed physician and surgeon in the state of Indiana.

Dr. Devnani is married to Dr. Suresh Devnani. The couple has two children and resides in Carmel, Indiana. In the spring of 2007 Drs. Devnani traveled to India to visit family and to volunteer at a medical camp in one of the poorest parts of the city of Mumbai.


Abby Beall, M.D.Abby Beall, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
Director of Maternity Care Center

After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Beall completed her internship and residency at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in West Reading, Pennsylvania. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Beall speaks limited Spanish.


Dan Rains, M.D.Dan Rains, M.D.
Assistant Director
Medical Director, Family Medicine Center

Dr. Rains received his medical degree from the University of Iowa. He completed his family practice residency in Muncie, Indiana. After this, he taught in Sioux City, Iowa for three years, also completing a fellowship in family medicine education. He directed the residency program in Shawnee, Oklahoma, for three years. From 1985 till 2000 he was in private family medicine in New Castle, Indiana. After a year of occupational medicine he returned to teaching at Community family medicine in April 2002.

His hobbies include music, theatre and golf. He lives with his wife, Susan, on Geist Reservoir. His sons, David and Isaac, live in California.


John Fleming, M.D.John W. Fleming, Ph.D., M.D., F.A.A.F.P.
Assistant Director

Dr. Fleming was born and raised in Shelbyville, Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from Purdue University in 1970, and then M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pharmacology from the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Dr. Fleming was assistant professor of pharmacology and medicine at IUSM. After seven years in basic science research, Dr. Fleming entered medical school at IUSM and received his medical degree in 1991. He completed his family medicine residency at Community Health Network in 1994 and then practiced family medicine in Shelbyville, Indiana for 11 years. He was chief of staff at W.S. Major Hospital in Shelbyville for four years and is the Shelby County health officer. Dr. Fleming joined the faculty of the Family Medicine Residency Program in 2005.

Dr. Fleming is married to Phyllis and has four children: JB, Wesley, Elizabeth and Sarah. Dr. Fleming is a private pilot and frequently flies his Piper Colt.  Other interests include Bible Study Fellowship (BSF International), amateur radio, and maintaining linux servers.


Susan Helsel, M.D.Susan Helsel, M.D.
Assistant Director

Dr. Helsel was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of South Carolina and received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. She attended the University of Virginia for two years in psychiatry residency. Dr. Helsel completed her family medicine residency at Community Health Network in Indianapolis where she and her husband, Michael, currently reside.


Tom Ledyard, M.D.Tom Ledyard, M.D.
Assistant Director

Tom was raised in a large family in Northwest Indiana. He received his bachelor degree at Indiana University and his medical degree at Michigan State University. He completed his residency at Community Hospitals in 1997. The strong influences of his family, education and mentors lead him to the path of working with the underserved in Indianapolis, Kenya and most recently at a community health center in Gary, Indiana. He returns to the residency program after 11 years to share his experiences and to continue to grow with the residents and faculty.

Tom is the Medical Director of Community Benefit and the newly-opened Jane Pauley Community Health Center in the Renaissance Center at 30th and Post..  His wife, Robin, is the President of Community Hospital East.  His daughter, Hannah, is at San Diego State studying theater, and daughter Jessica is a student at University High School.


Rachel Shockley, D.O.Rachel Shockley, D.O.
Assistant Director

Dr. Shockley was born and raised near Brazil, Indiana. She received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She received her medical education from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. She completed her family medicine residency at Community Health Network in Indianapolis.

Dr. Shockley and her husband, Randy, reside in Carmel. Her hobbies include gardening, traveling, reading and playing the piano.


Sarah Curry, MDSarah Curry, M.D.
Clinical Faculty

Dr. Curry was raised in the rural community of Covington, Indiana. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from Indiana University and her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her intern year in family medicine at the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine in Madison, Wisconsin, and then came home to Community Health Network to finish her second and third years of family medicine residency training. During her third year of residency, Dr. Curry served as a chief resident and recently graduated from Community's Family Medicine Residency in July 2008. She is excited to serve the program and help guide residents to recognize their full potential as she did herself at Community.

Dr. Curry and her husband, Travis, enjoy traveling, hiking and camping. She also enjoys gardening tomatoes, peppers and beans out of her front flower bed.


Clifton Knight, M.D.Clifton Knight, M.D.
Clinical Faculty
Vice President, Medical & Academic Affairs

Dr. Knight was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree in Medical Technology from Ball State University. His medical degree is from the Indiana University School of Medicine, and he completed his residency training in family medicine at Community Health Network.

Prior to joining the faculty of the family medicine Center, Dr. Knight was in private practice in Flora, Indiana. In 1995, he completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Knight is a past president of the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians and represents Indiana as a delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has a particular interest in geriatrics and office procedures. He has been a full-time faculty member of the Community family medicine residency program since 1992. Dr. Knight served as program director of the residency from 2001 to 2007.

Dr. Knight and his wife, Shelly, have three children. Outside of practice, he is involved in youth travel soccer as a coach, referee and administrator in the Fishers Soccer Club.

What I like about our residency: "Our residency focuses on preparing you for your career and life as a family physician. We strive to help you become successful as a physician and as a person."


Kathy Zoppi, Ph.D., M.P.H.Kathy Zoppi, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Director of Behavioral Science

Kathy is responsible for resident training in behavioral science, working with others on community medicine and faculty development. She has been teaching family practice residents since 1986, and has worked in residency education in Detroit at Bon Secours Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital prior to moving to Indiana in 1993. She has taught at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she developed a fellowship in underserved medicine and worked on communication curriculum for medical students. Kathy completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She received her M.P.H. degree in health education-health behavior degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she also earned her Ph.D. in health communication research.

Her research interests include the patient-physician communication process in medical encounters, communication and health disparities, care of underserved patients, and the wellbeing of medical students and residents. She has been very involved in the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, currently serving as the co-chair of the Group on Physician-Patient Communication.

Hobbies include biking, reading and yoga. She and her husband, David, have a son, Thomas, who likes soccer and art.


Stephanie Galligan, M.S.W.Stephanie Curry, M.S.W.
Behavioral Faculty

Stephanie is part of the behavioral faculty for the residency program. She grew up in Bloomington, Indiana and received her undergraduate degree in social work from Indiana University in 2002. Stephanie then moved to St. Louis and received her masters in social work from Washington University in December of 2003. Her concentration was in family mental health and after graduation she spent a year working for child protection services in London, England. After returning to the United States, Stephanie went on to work as a home based therapist, working primarily with children and families. She also spent time working as an outpatient therapist at a community mental health center where she worked with individuals, families and groups. She has been with the residency program since July 2007 and enjoys working with the residents and seeing patients in the office.

Stephanie enjoys traveling, going to concerts, going to the theatre and watching the Colts! She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends.


Tina Burch, R.N.Tina Burch, R.N.
Practice Administrator

Tina was born and raised in Indianapolis. She graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in nursing and has worked at Community since 1985. With a background in floor nursing and management of an inpatient neurology/neurosurgical unit, Tina is the team leader for the nursing and office personnel at the Pediatric Care Center, Maternity Care Center and the Family Medicine Center.

She and her husband, David, also a registered nurse with Community, live on the south side of Indianapolis with their children, Carrie, Julia and Patrick.


Melisa FranklinMelisa Franklin
Practice Manager

Melisa was born in Indianapolis. She has a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration from National American University. Prior to joining Community Health Network she was a clinic manager for outpatient psychiatric clinic for seven years and a medical claim adjuster for five years. Melisa is the practice manager for the Pediatric Care Center, Maternity Care Center and the Family Medicine Center.

Melisa and her husband, Ted, reside on the eastside of Indianapolis with their four children. She enjoys photography, racing and football.


Sally M. WagnerSally M. Wagner
Residency Coordinator

Sally is a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and has been employed with Community for 25 years. She received an associate's degree in elementary education and secretarial science from Butler University in Indianapolis.

Sally has two daughters, Amanda and Katherine, and two "adopted" Maltese kids, Sebastian and Howard.
