EMS education programs
Paramedic program gains CAAHEP Accreditation
In 2008, Community Health Network’s paramedic program, located at Community Hospital East, passed its first accreditation survey by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the EMS Professions.
"The surveyors were very complimentary of our program," says Randy Wright, vice president of emergency services. "They said it was very well regarded in the community with all of the post graduates they have spoken with, as well as agencies who have hired our recent graduates. I want to thank John Zartman, Mike Matheny and Terri Hamilton for their great work and preparation for the survey and for the outstanding program that we offer for people in the community who wish to become a paramedic."
Those who have graduated from Community’s paramedic program have a 100 percent pass rate for the national registry exam.
Emergency medical technician-basic

This course begins in January and July each year. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
This course is cornerstone of EMS and is approximately 21 weeks in length and meets twice a week. In addition, you are expected to complete 24 hours of clinical time in any of the Community Health Network emergency departments, and 24 hours with one or more of our affiliated Emergency Medical Services providers.
This course will prepare you to take the Indiana state written and practical exams for certification.
Emergency Medical Technician-Basics (EMT-Bs) work at private ambulance service providers, fire departments, in the hospital and in industrial facilities. EMT-Bs are required to complete continuing education hours every two years to remain certified and competent in skills. Many of these hours are available through the Community Health Network EMS Education department or its affiliated providers. The cost of this program is $650.00, which includes lab fees, handouts and books.

This program is approximately 14 months in length, and is broken down into didactic, clinical and internship components. Classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays at Community Hospital East.
Applicants for this course must first hold a current EMT certification. Selection into this program is based on a TABE exam (basic knowledge) and an EMT-B exam. The application process also includes a personal interview, letters of recommendation, and physical exam. All applicants who meet the pre-requisites and the application requirements will be scheduled for the pre-testing and the interview section of the application process. Failure to meet all requirements in the application process will result in the applicant being dropped from the application process.
Clinical and internship rotations are scheduled outside of, and in addition to, the classroom hours. The course includes ECG interpretation, advanced airway management, medication administration and other advanced life support skills. The curriculum meets or exceeds the DOT national standards and will prepare the student to sit for the National Registry written and practical exams. The student will be expected to complete clinical rotations in any of the Community Health Network emergency departments, ambulance rotation at one or more of our affiliated providers, intensive care unit, surgery department, respiratory care, as well as labor and delivery. Sub-courses also included in this course are Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Prehospital Trauma Life Support.
The cost for this course is $4000.00, which includes lab and technical fees, tuition, sub-courses and books.
