EMS educational staff

John ZartmanJohn R. Zartman, B.S., NREMT-P, P.I.
Director, Emergency Medical Services and EMS Education

John brings to the program 32 years of experience and serves as the director of EMS Educator and Providers Services for Community Health Network. He began his career in EMS while still attending Peru High School during the summer of 1973, while working for a local funeral home. Falling in love with the emergency side of things, he enrolled in one of Indiana's first emergency medical technician courses, becoming a National Registry EMT in the summer of 1974. Over the years, John has had the opportunity to work for and with many outstanding ambulance providers while developing a well-rounded knowledge of the EMS environment. He became a paramedic in 1979 and served as the director of EMS for Memorial Hospital Cass County EMS for 12 years before coming to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis he served with a major hospital as an EMS educator before transferring to a sister facility and serving as director of EMS education for the University of Saint Francis.

John holds a baccalaureate degree from the American College of Pre-Hospital Medicine, certificates of management from Indiana University-Indianapolis and most EMS certifications. John is a certified paramedic in Indiana and Florida, as well as a Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic (NREMT-P). John holds both provider and instructor certifications for CPR, ACLS, PALS, PPC, PHTLS and EVOC. He serves on the Indiana State EMS Commission Education Advisory Committee as well as being an Indiana State Practical Skills Representative and a National Registry Representative.


Michael MathenyMichael K. Matheny, B.S., NREMT-P, P.I.
ALS Coordinator, Paramedic Course Lead Educator

Mike completed his bachelor's degree in biology and sports medicine at Purdue University in 1985. He began his career as the head athletic trainer at Cardinal Ritter High School in Indianapolis. While working as an athletic trainer, Mike began his EMS career in 1989, completing EMT training through Wishard Memorial Hospital/Indiana University Medical Center. In 1991, Mike completed his paramedic training through Wishard Memorial Hospital/Indiana University Medical Center. After his tenure as an athletic trainer, Mike accepted a position at Community Health Network South Campus as a critical care paramedic in the ICU. In 1997, Mike completed an associate's degree in paramedic science at the Indiana University School of Allied Health. In 2000, Mike joined the EMS Education Department at Community Hospital East. In addition, Mike holds certifications as an instructor in ACLS, AMLS, CPR, PALS, PHTLS and PPC. He has special interests in 12 Lead EKG and cell physiology.


Terri R. Hamilton, NREMT-P, P.I.
EMS Educator

Terri began in 1989 as a volunteer EMT with a local funeral home/ambulance service. In 1997 she assisted in the creation of a new ambulance service that is still operating in her local community. In 2002 she began as a director of that service and continues as an officer today. Also in 1997 Terri earned her Primary Instructor certification and began teaching EMT-B courses; she continues to teach 2-3 courses per year. In 2001 she earned her NREMT-Paramedic certification and worked full time with an ALS service until she accepted a position as a paramedic in the Emergency Department at Riley Children’s Hospital. In April 2007, Terri began as a full-time educator with Community Health Network.

Terri has served as an Indiana State Skills Representative since 1999 and in July of 2006 was appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels to the Indiana EMS Commission. Her certifications include NREMT-Paramedic, Primary Instructor, EVOC, EVOC Instructor, American Safety & Health Institute Instructor, ACLS Provider, ACLS Instructor, PALS Provider, PALS Instructor, BLS Provider, BLS Instructor, PHTLS Provider, PHTLS Instructor, and Pediatric Prehospital Care Provider.


Eric Vonderohe, M.D.
Medical Director

Dr. Vonderohe completed his medical degree at Indiana University in 1987. He went on to complete his internship and residency at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Dr. Vonderohe joined Community Health Network Medical Associates in 1990 and continues to work at Methodist Hospital. Dr. Vonderohe serves as medical director for Community Health Network’s EMS Education, the Franklin Township Fire Department, the Lawrence Township Fire Department, Seals Ambulance Service and the Warren Township Fire Department, which recently merged with the Indianapolis Fire Department.


Thomas Gansman, MDThomas Gansman, M.D.
Medical Director, Southeast Division

Dr. Gansman completed his medical degree at the University of North Carolina and his residency at Indiana University/Methodist Hospital. Dr. Gansman is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.
