A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported the effectiveness of colonoscopy in saving lives through the removal of colon polyps. In this study of more than 2,000 men and women, death rate from colorectal cancer was cut by 53% in patients who had colonoscopies and had the precancerous polyps removed. This is the first time reduction in mortality from colon cancer was clearly demonstrated.  (Source: National Polyp Study; N Engl J Med 2012; 366:687-696 February 23, 2012)
