Ambulatory phlebectomy

Ambulatory (micro) phlebectomy is a procedure that removes and disrupts varicose veins through a series of tiny (micro) skin incisions.

We typically use this procedure to treat large bulging varicose veins in the following patients:

• Patients who have already had the saphenous vein treated with endovenous laser ablation (EVLT)
• Patients who have already had the saphenous vein removed by stripping or other technique
• Patients who have normal saphenous veins

Ambulatory (micro) phlebectomy is performed on an outpatient basis. We can perform this procedure at the same session as an endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) procedure or at a different time.

Procedure

After the leg is prepped and draped using sterile techniques, the skin around the varicose veins is numbed with local anesthetic. We then remove/disrupt the varicose veins through a series of tiny (micro) incisions utilizing special hooks. The large bulging veins are then removed. When we are done, small pressure dressings are applied to the incisions and the patient is instructed to wear a thigh-high compression stocking for two weeks.

Long-term results of this safe, effective procedure have been shown in the medical literature (and in our own practice) to be excellent.
