Community School of Radiologic Technology

Admission requirements

Radiology tech students reviewing x-ray To be considered for acceptance into the School of Radiologic Technology, an applicant must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Submit application and official transcripts by the January 15 deadline date.
  • Submit a $10 application fee (payable to Community Hospital).
  • Have earned a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a college degree or completed IVY Tech’s Radiologic Technology program prerequisites (see Admission Policy for detailed information). 
  • Submit official transcript(s) from accredited college(s). It is suggested the applicant obtain a personal official transcript to evaluate for accuracy and completeness.
  • Have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 system in math and science courses.
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 system.
  • Complete a minimum of 15 credits from an accredited college/university. Remedial level courses will not be applied towards entry requirements. The following courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. (Call program staff to confirm institution's credits/courses will be accepted.):
    • Anatomy and physiology (minimum of 6 credits within the last three years)
    • English composition
    • Public speaking
    • Algebra (100 level or higher)
    Additional courses are recommended and can help make applicants more competitive. Any of the following courses are suggested:
    • Introduction to Microcomputers
    • Medical Terminology
    • Physics
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Additional Algebra or other higher-level math
  • Additional consideration will be given to current Community Health Network employees/volunteers who meet program requirements.
  • Incomplete course work or course work in progress will not be considered.
  • Must have shadowed in a Medical Imaging department.

In addition to the above, the applicant must possess non-academic skills in order to participate in the program. These technical standards are consistent with the duties of an entry-level radiographer in a professional position. The applicant must have:

  • Sufficient eyesight to observe patients, manipulate equipment and evaluate radiographic quality.
  • Sufficient hearing to assess patient needs and communicate verbally with other health care providers.
  • Sufficient verbal and written skills to communicate needs promptly and effectively in English.
  • Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly, manipulate equipment, lift a minimum of 30 pounds and ensure patient safety.
  • Satisfactory intellectual and emotional functions to exercise independent judgment and discretion in the safe technical performance of medical imaging procedures.

If you are qualified to apply for entrance into our program, please submit your completed application with all official college transcripts. You also must submit a $10 application fee (payable to Community Hospital). All information must be received by January 15. Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview or admission into the program. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of positions available, the program reserves the right to limit the number of applicants to a maximum of twenty-five interviews. The following criteria will be used when selecting applicants for interviews: Meeting all entrance requirements; overall academic background; math and science GPA. 

Interviews will be begin in February and may continue through March. Applicants will be accepted into the program using the above-listed criteria along with the results of a personal interview. Applicants will be notified of acceptance after all interviews are completed.

Classes will begin on June 10, 2013. If you are accepted, you will be required to have satisfactorily completed a physical examination prior to the beginning of the program. Final acceptance is contingent on the applicant's meeting of the technical standards for the program. You also must provide proof of health insurance.
