ImPACT concussion testing

Community Health Network is pleased to participate and support a concussion management program utilizing the ImPACT concussion evaluation system. The testing allows a baseline and post-concussion assessment to better manage concussion for athletes of all ages.

An initial ImPACT baseline test of brain function is completed prior to an athlete’s active participation in a sports activity. The ImPACT test evaluates brain function areas; memory, reaction time, processing speed and concentration. The test may be administered by specially trained athletic trainer, school nurse, athletic director, team doctor or psychologist. Post-concussion care and the management of concussion should only be administered by a trained medical professional.

• If a head injury occurs a second test is taken to compare to the pre-season test to determine the severity of the injury.
• The ImPACT test is not a stand-alone tool to determine when an athlete can return to competition.
• An examination by a physician to assess signs and symptoms and a neurological exam is necessary to assess if the injury has healed prior to an athlete returning the active participation.
