A doula is an optional labor coach who provides emotional, physical and informational support to you before, during and just after childbirth.

Doulas also help plan labor and the birthing experience—as little or as much as you’d like. Your doula will stay with you from labor through delivery, and can coach you in natural labor.

• Doulas do not replace medical staff or nurses, but work to help make the delivery more comfortable.
• If you have extraordinary support needs, or if your heart’s desire is to have a baby without an epidural, you should look into doula services.
