Community Hospitals of Indiana 50th Anniversary timeline: 1980s

1981

A new lab opens at Community Hospital (East), along with Building 5, a medical office building.

1982

• Ground is broken for Community Hospital North to provide new health care options on the booming northeast side of Indianapolis.
• University Heights Hospital breaks ground for what is now the present location of Community Hospital South facility.
• MedCheck Castleton opens.

1984

• University Heights Hospital dedicates its new facility on County Line Road.
• MedCheck Broad Ripple opens.

1985

• Community Hospital North opens in June. Psychiatric units move from Community Hospital East to the new Psychiatric Pavilion on the North campus.
• The Diabetes Care Center opens, and the first Community Hospital home-care program begins.
• MedCheck East opens.
• Pro Health, Community Health Network’s physician-hospital organization, is formed. The organization provides employers and insurance companies an integrated network of hospitals, physicians, allied health professionals, extended-care facilities and home-health agencies.

1986

A new tower is added at Community Hospital of Anderson and Madison County, and outpatient facilities and inpatient rooms are renovated and modernized.

1987

The Family Rooms open at Community Hospital North. The unit features LDRP—labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum—rooms, allowing mothers and families to remain in the same room throughout their stay.

1988

• MedCheck Carmel opens.
• Community Hospital East opens its Same Day Surgery Center.

1989

Community Health Network acquires University Heights Hospital on the south side of Indianapolis on September 25, renaming it Community Hospital South and promising to expand and add services to the facility.
