Community Hospitals of Indiana 50th anniversary timeline: 1950s
1951
A fundraising campaign is launched to build Community Hospital, involving area residents and businesses determined to bring quality health care to the growing east side of Indianapolis.
1954
Ground is broken at 16th Street and Ritter Avenue for the construction of Community Hospital. Vice President Richard Nixon attends the groundbreaking ceremony at the 28-acre site donated by Edward F. Gallahue.
1956
Community Hospital opens its doors August 6. The hospital, which is now known as Community Hospital East, launches with 300 beds and 111 employees. Also, the Community Hospital Auxiliary forms.
